No Man Stands Alone

Two’s AZA’s Stand UP Campaign for Youth Mental Health

This year, Two’s Stand UP Campaign is focused on three primary goals: raising money for therapy programs, organizing children’s book drives for sick kids, and advocating for greater awareness and access to youth mental health resources. While Kansas City has a number of free or affordable family mental health programs, one of the biggest challenges is making sure that kids and teens can actually access the help they need.

Our Mission

Two’s want to bring greater awareness to the importance of parents and guardians checking in with their children and recognizing when they may need additional support. We also recognize that not everyone has the ability to donate money or participate in mental health advocacy. That’s why we are pairing our Stand Up campaign with a children’s book drive. Through regional conventions, community fundraising events, and council events, we will collect new coloring books and stories to donate to Children’s Mercy. This initiative complements our broader efforts to support children’s emotional well-being by providing comfort, entertainment, and a sense of connection during difficult times.

A large part of our campaign will also focus on our own chapter. We will hold educational programs to help our members better understand mental health, how to recognize when someone may be struggling, and how to support one another. We will also conduct monthly Two’s check-ins with our fellow Alephs, creating opportunities to connect, listen, and make sure no one feels like they have to face their struggles alone. Because while we want to create change in our community, we believe true change starts with us.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Two’s has launched a Coloring Book Drive to help bring a little joy and comfort to children facing difficult times. We are collecting new coloring books to donate to Children’s Mercy, where they can help bring a smile to a child in need. If you would like to donate coloring books, email us at twos.aza@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off. Can’t make it to a drop-off? You can also support the drive through our GoFundMe. 100% of the proceeds will go toward purchasing new coloring books for Children’s Mercy and supporting our partner, NAMI Greater Kansas City. Every coloring book, every donation, and every act of support can make a difference for a child and help remind them that they are not alone.

Mental Health Partnership

Two’s is partnering with NAMI Greater Kansas City (National Alliance on Mental Illiness) Kansas City, whose mission is to promote mental wellness, build acceptance in our community, and give hope to people affected by mental illness through advocacy, education, and support.

Advocacy

Two’s will work with our partner NAMI to advocate for mental health changes. NAMI works with policymakers to advance priority issues and ensure that the voice of people affected by mental illness is considered in policymaking. Read NAMI’s recent letters to federal leaders, submitted comments and testimony and other resources.

DC
BY THE NUMBERS

The United States is experiencing a youth mental health crisis, and Kansas City is neither immune nor a bystander. Local data from Children’s Mercy Kansas City shows steep increases in childhood anxiety and depression over the past decade, with a large percentage of youth going untreated. According to Children’s Mercy Kansas City, nearly 3,000 children underwent assessment for acute mental health needs at Children’s Mercy in 2022, and 40 to 50% of children in the Kansas City region don’t get treatment for their mental health needs.

RESOURCES
SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, spread hope, spark meaningful action around one of the most urgent mental health issues of our time, and remind people that no one has to face their struggles alone. NAMI has a plethora of resources available on their website, including teen help likes and phone numbers and support groups. “Our goal is to ensure that individuals, friends, and families have access to the tools, resources, and support they need to talk openly about suicide prevention, recognize warning signs, and seek help.””
