The convention of the western region of A. Z. A., comprising the states of Missouri, Kansas and Colorado, opened in Kansas City, Friday morning, December 27. Approximately twenty chapters have sent representatives to participate in the basketball, oration and debate tournaments which are the highlights of the gathering.

The first round of the oratorical contest was held at The Center Friday night with Bernard T. Hurwitz, Harry Friedberg and (Kansas City AZA #2 charter member) Abraham Margolin acting as judges.

The local A. Z. A. chapters, No. 2 and No. 200, are the convention hosts and as such have prepared a varied round ·of social engagements to augment  the program of the regional conclave. A dance and mixer, held at Brookside Manor Friday night following the oration contest, initiated the social activities.

Saturday and Sunday will bring more contests in debate and basketball. Winners will be presented with medals at the Ambassador hotel. The public is urged to attend the Sunday afternoon contests, which will take place at the Center.

Regional winners in oratory and debate will compete in a district tournament to be held in St. Louis in February. Those who place first in that contest will try for national honors at the summer camp convention scheduled for July 20 to 28 in Pacific Palisades, just outside of Santa Monica, Calif.

The general convention committee is: Nate Stein, David Minkin (of AZA #2) and Jack Louis.

  • Debate – Leonard Belove and Leon Sedler
