(From the Nov. 14, 1924 issue of The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle)

The Council of the Clubs will hold an inter-club literary contest the later part of December, it was decided at the last meeting of the Council on November 11th. The events for the contest will be as follows: poem, essay, story, oration, declamation and extemporaneous speech…. The resignation of the Aleph Zadik Aleph Order for Young Hebrew Men was accepted by the Council at the meeting. Mr. Joseph Rosenweig was elected reporter-sergeant-at-arms in the place of Mr. Philip Klutznick, the A.Z.A. representative.

(Klutznick was Two’s second chapter Godol. In 1925, he was elected Grand Aleph Godol. In April 1924, Rosenwieg was initiated into Two’s.)

The A.Z.A. Council of Kansas City met at the Jewish Center Nov. 6. Three chairmen were elected for the Mo.-Kans. Regional convention. They were: Ernie Weinstein, publicity; George Berg, arrangement chair; and (Two’s Godol) Sam Weiner, social committee chair.

The annual AZA Sabbath at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Nov. 15, at the Jewish Community Center, will include the presentation of the Dave Belzer Award for Distinguished Service to BBYO. The award is given by the Greater Kansas City AZA and BBG Councils to an adult who has shown a high degree of devotion, concern and interest in the BBYO program. An original service for the evening, written by the AZA Council, will be carried by Larry Goodman of Albert Michelson AZA. The city final runoffs for the storytelling contest will be held prior to the regional convention.

Jack E. Lapin

Jack E. (Babe) Lapin, 64, president of the former Jack Lapin & Co., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the home. A life-long resident, he was a member of Temple B’nai Jehudah, B’nai B’rith, and Oakwood Country Club. Mr. Lapin was a graduate from the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he was a letterman and member of the baseball team. He was a member of the Northeast High School basketball team in 1927-1928. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sally Lapin of the home; a son, Edward Lapin; a daughter, Mrs. Julie Gerson; a brother, Joe Lapin; a sister, Mrs. Mary Schifman; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Louis Memorial Chapel; private graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery.

The Independent team led by Frank Friedman and the SYO team are deadlocked in a tie for first place, with 3-0. … AZA Chapter #22, with a 2-1 record, has Ron Altman, Mitch Gale and Stuart Cohen leadings its attack. … Jim Lefko leads the H.S.T. team, which shares a 1-2 record with Dag Hammarskjold and Hatikvah… USY and AZA Chapter 2 are tied for last place with a 0-3 record.

All BBYO BBG and AZA chapters held elections Sunday, Oct. 17, for the next term. … Two’s AZA No. 2 elected Mike Neufeld, Aleph Godol; Danny Ross, Aleph S’gan; Jared Cole, Aleph Moreh; Daniel Lipsky, Aleph Mazkir; Bobby Gershon, Gizbor; Jared Cole, Aleph Sopher; Nathan Ross, Shaliach Sammy Loren, Aleph Shotare Godol (first sergeant-at-arms); Jake Goldstein, Aleph Sbotare Goclol (second sergeant-at-arms); Sam Hopkins, Aleph Kohen Godol; and Sweetheart Dance planners Justin Katz, Sam Hopkins and Justin Cinnamon. The advisers for Two’s are Heath Winer and Todd Hollander…

During the second weekend in November, first-year BBYO members will attend a convention on Overland Park. Teens from the Mid-America Region, which consists of the Kansas City area; Omaha, Neb.; and St. Louis will gather to learn how BBYO started and how it operated today. They will leave the convention not only full of BBYO facts, but also with new friendships and memories. Convention coordinators are: Baree Nottberg and Andrew Schlactner. Nottberg is a senior at Shawnee Mission South, and Schlachter is a junior at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. Both say they are excited to introduce new members to BBYO.

(On Oct.3, 1998, Nottberg was crowned Two’s AZA Belle of the Ball at Twos’ 1998 Yom Kippur Dance. Schlactner is a member of Nordaunian AZA)

In the BBYO Flag Football Tournament, Two’s AZA beat Palmach, 20-14. Two’s is now 3-1…

Newly elected officers of the BBYO adult advisory board are Joel Levine, chair; Dale Magariel and Keith Novorr, vice chairs; Donna Katz and Michelle Koven, secretaries; Bonnie Buchbinder, treasurer; Janelle Flacks, editor; and Johnette Zimmerman, past chair. New board members introduced at the last meeting are Julie Hammer, Karen Lesky and Paula Rubin.
