A Youths’ Celebration of Chanukkah, on a scale never hitherto witnessed in Kansas City, will take place Sunday, 3 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center. The program will have the participation not only of the Center Council of Clubs, but of almost every group of young people in Kansas City, all of whose members and representatives have been asked to join in the celebration. The program will be the first public affair of the newly organized Department of Clubs and Affiliated Activities at The Center. It is the purpose of this department to aid in coordinating all Jewish youth movements and groups in Kansas City, irrespective of the meeting place or affiliates of these young people’s organizations. The program Sunday will include a “Talk on Chanukah” by Lester Peltzman (Two’s AZA). Jack Brown (Two’s AZA Godol) will give the Principal Address, “Expanding the Horizons of Youth.

The AZA and BBG Councils sponsored an Israeli Night in the Youth Lounge at the JCC on Saturday, Nov. 23, with more than 125 people in attendance. Ray Jagoda, a member of the 1974 Kansas City Israel Pilgrimage, prepared a slide-tape presentation. A senior member of Nordaunian AZA, Ray has been active in the JCC-BBYO teen program for the past four years. Following the presentation, many of those present tried their hand at Israeli folk dancing, with the help of members of last summer’s pilgrimage. … At the recent annual AZA Sabbath, the AZA Council presented the 1974 Dave Belzer Award for distinguished service to BBYO to Marilynne Rosenthal, for her devotion, concern and interest in the BBYO program. The presentation was made by last year’s recipient, Mrs. Helen Slotnick.

The Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy Rams varsity boys basketball team started its season last week with a victory at the home opener against Midland Academy. The Rams beat the Mustangs 78-50. The game was played at the Ram’s home court in the Jewish Community Center.
Though the beginning of the game started out a bit sloppy, the intensity exhibited by both teams was exceptional throughout the match. While the Midland Mustangs had speed and agility, the Rams defense prevailed in the end.
“I thought that the team played well for the first game of the season,” coach Bob Hennecke said. “We stayed with our up-tempo style throughout the game and eventually wore down our opponent. We committed more turnovers than we would like, but I am confident that with time we will improve in this area.”
As in past years, the Rams committed themselves to team play.
“They [Rams] have a good team, and play very well together,” said Warren Allen, a Hebrew Academy high school teacher who watched the game.
“I think we played cohesively,” sophomore Jake Schlozman said. “We all knew what each players next move was; we reacted.”
The high scorers for the game were junior Josh Magariel with 20 points, Schlozman with 16, junior Justin Kaplan with 12 and senior Jon Cline with 10.
“After the first game, there’s only good thought for the rest of the season,” Hennecke said. “I have a very positive outlook for this team based on how they practice. They work hard without complaining, and they truly enjoy playing with one another.”
